LASIK FAQs

Here are some very common LASIK eye surgery questions you may have.

Does LASIK eye surgery (laser eye surgery) hurt?

The LASIK procedure is painless because the eye is numbed.  The main feeling you will experience is pressure on and around the eye.  Some LASIK patients experience the feeling of having something in their eye for a day or two following the treatment.

Can I see the LASIK procedure as it is being done?

You will be awake but very relaxed.   You will mainly see lights and blurred images.

LASIK Eye Surgery FAQs - Questions

Will I experience pain after the (LASIK) Laser Eye Surgery treatment?

A small percentage of patients feel burning or scratchiness, but this feeling usually lasts only a couple of hours.  Most people are fine if the take a nap shortly after the procedure

How Soon After Surgery Will I See Well?

Many people notice a large difference as they leave the office.  More than 4 out of 5 patients can pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses after the treatment.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

The best way to determine if LASIK is right for you is to have an evaluation and consultation with a LASIK surgeon.  However, patients over 18 years of age, without eye disease, corneal scars or retinal problems are suitable.  Ideal patients are those who are unhappy with their contact lenses or glasses and wish to enrich their lives with natural, normal vision.

How soon can I swim?

Swimming pools should be avoided for 1 week, and you should stay out of rivers,

Is LASIK eye surgery permanent?

Yes. Following an initial healing period of two to three months, the effect of the treatment is lifelong.

Will I still need reading glasses after the treatment?

The average patient under 40 will be able to read well without glasses after the procedure.  Those over 40 may require glasses when reading fine print due to a natural weakening of the focusing muscles that occurs in the early 40’s.  LASIK cannot correct presbyopia, but please ask about an alternative called monovision.

What is the follow-up process after my treatment?

Follow-up visits are scheduled for the day after your treatment, and then one month and 3 months later.  Occasionally a patient will be required to visit more often.

How soon after the treatment can I bathe or take a shower?

Patients can bathe the same day as the procedure unless directed otherwise by their LASIK surgeon.  Showers should be avoided for 2 days, and you should keep soap or water away from your eyes.  Also, do not rub your eyes for the first month after your LASIK treatment.

Can both eyes be treated at the same time?

LASIK Treatment can be performed on both eyes on the same day, or you can choose to have one eye done at a time.  By treating both eyes at the same time, you avoid the annoyance of being nearsighted in only one eye between procedures.

How long does LASIK take?

An average LASIK procedure takes approximately 6 minutes for each eye.  The surgery is performed in a comfortable Excimer Laser Eye Surgery suite.

Can I drive home from my procedure?

You should not drive the day of treatment. After that, you may drive when you are sure that your visual acuity and eye comfort will allow you to drive safely.

How soon can I wear eye makeup?

Eye makeup can be worn starting 1 to 2 weeks after your treatment.  It is highly recommended that you purchase new eye makeup to avoid infection.  This is especially important for mascara.

How soon can I exercise?

As soon as you feel ready you can start non-contact sports.  When participating in rough or contact sports eye protection should be worn.

What kind of anesthesia is used during the treatment?

Drops are used to numb the eye, and sometimes an oral medication is used to help reduce anxiety.
