LASIK Corneal Abrasion

Occasionally a small corneal abrasion develops during the LASIK procedure.  This only happens in a small percentage of LASIK treatments when the surface cells of the eye do not adhere well.  If a corneal abrasion develops, a very thin bandage contact lens may be applied by the LASIK Surgeon and removed after 1 to 3 days when the abrasion has healed.  The bandage may not be necessary as the eye heals very quickly even without it.

Rarely, if a patient has a condition call Epithelial Basement Membrane Disorder it may cause the epithelium to become loosened during the creation of the flap without fully separating it. This can occur with or without a corneal abrasion and is treated in a similar manner with a bandage contact lens. In both cases, long-term effects are rare.
