LASIK surgery undercorrection and overcorrection
The amount and shape of laser energy used to correct your personal prescription is based on a practice-specific “nomogram” developed by your LASIK Surgeon. Each individuals response to the treatment will be different, and in some cases not entirely average. In most cases the difference is so minute it is barely noticeable, but sometimes an undercorrection or overcorrection can occur. Any under or overcorrection will be monitored by you LASIK surgeon to determine its effect on your correction.
The more common of the two is undercorrection. In some patients over forty, a slight undercorrection may be positive, as it will not seriously affect vision and can help with reading.

More prominent undercorrections can require the patient to undergo an LASIK surgery enhancement procedure. The chances of this happening is greater in patients with a higher level of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
To reduce the likeliness of under and overcorrection, LASIK Surgeons use consistent technique, meticulous instrument and laser calibration and constantly analyze their outcomes. Each LASIK practice should keep a database of treatment results so they can adjust their nomogram accordingly and significantly decrease the chances of unplanned under or overcorrection.

Occasionally an overcorrection may occur, but in most cases corrects itself within a month. After a farsighted procedure, an overcorrection will cause you to be temporarily nearsighted. Your distance vision will be mildly blurry, and your near vision quite good. An overcorrection in a nearsighted treatment will make it more difficult to see at a close range, but only temporarily. Temporary over and undercorrections can be made more tolerable with glasses or contact lenses, but most patients are fine without them. |
| Additional eye drops may be prescribed by your LASIK Surgeon to help your eye heal more predictably and enhancements may be performed 3 to 6 months after your initial treatment when your vision has stablilized. |
