Day of LASIK Surgery
The day of your LASIK surgery you will need to be driven to and from the practice. Be prepared to spend about 2 hours at the office. Most laser suites are kept a bit cooler, so dress comfortable and warmly. Try not to bring too many personal items as you will being moving in and out of several rooms.
The Actual Surgery Day
The day of your surgery, the staff will make you feel comfortable as they prepare you for the treatment. If you have not already signed a statement of informed consent, this will need to be done. If you have any final questions or concerns please voice them before signing the informed consent.

A staff member will begin to place a series of drops in your eye. These are antibiotics, numbing agents, and depending on your treatment, some may dilate the pupil. You will be offered a mild sedative to help you relax. Within a few minutes you will make your way to the laser suite. You will be asked to sit in a comfortable, recling chair or platform and additional numbing drops will be placed in the eye. Either a staff member or the LASIK Surgeon will sterilize the area around your eye. |

Next, a small device is situated around the edges of your eyelid to help you avoid blinking during your treatment. You will feel some gentle pressure around your eyes as the surgeon uses an assortment of instruments. Expect your vision to be blurry and momentarily go dark as the flap is created during LASIK. While you may hear some sounds of instruments being turned on and off, it is usually less noisy than visiting your dentist.
After the flap has been made you will be instructed to focus on a light located on the laser. It will be blurry. This laser will align with your eye and track its movement as the laser resurfaces your cornea. Depending on your prescription, the laser process will take less than 3 minutes. |
It is normal to hear clicking sounds as the laser is applied. When the laser process is finished, the surgeon will replace the flap and irrigate the eye. Throughout the entire process, the staff will be talking to you and letting you know the progress of the treatment. You are not expected to respond. Just relax and lie as still as possible.
The surgeon will verify that the flaps are positioned correctly and sealed so they can start the healing process. Once this has been done you will sit in a comfortable recovery room for a short period of time before going home. While you wait, a technician will give you all the information you need to use the drops that will be supplied. |
