What is CUSTOM LASIK

Custom LASIK is as light passes through the eye, its rays are distorted by the imperfections in the cornea and crystalline lens, creating “aberrations”.  Approximately 90% of these aberrations create common conditions – farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism

These conditions can easily treated with optical devices such as contact lenses, glasses or Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK, PRK or LASEK).  The final 10% of optical aberrations create images altered by chromatic aberration, spherical aberration, diffraction, curvature of field, coma, trefoils and quadrafoils.  These are known as “higher order aberrations”.

What is custom LASIK - LASIK EYE SURGERY - LASER EYE SURGERY

Higher order aberrations are completely unique to each patient, only occuring in a visually significant manner in 10% to 15% of the general population.  These patients may benefit most from the use of a wavefront-guided laser eye surgery., which creates an entirely customized reshaping of the corneal surface.

A wavefront analysis system, called an Aberrometer, is used to measure the higher order aberrations in order to customize the shaping of the cornea.  This measurement is then interfaced with a laser, controlled by a computer, to direct a minute beam of laser energy across the surface of the cornea.

The Aberrometer sends low-energy laser light into the eye, which then reflects off the retina and returns through the lens and cornea as an outgoing wavefront.  This wavefront is measured by the Aberrometer and determines aberrations of the entire eye.  Using the Aberrometer System, surgeons can see refractive aberrations clearly, accurately and in rotating 3-D images.

Using a combination of  the Aberrometer and the Excimer Laser Eye Surgery System, a customized corneal ablation can be created.  The Excimer Laser Eye Surgery System uses a high-speed computerized tracking method to monitor the eyes movement and create a custom ablation surface.
Eyes constantly make very small movements called “saccadic” movements which cannot be controlled.  The tracking system scans the eye thousands of times each second and makes tiny adjustments to reposition the laser beam between pulses of light.

The Excimer Laser Eye Surgery System uses a beam of cool laser light less than one millimeter wide.  The beam moves across the corneal surface very quickly in an overlapping pattern, helping the surgeon form a smooth, customized corneal shape.  The patient experiences a short recovery time and an individualized correction of their prescription.
