What is EPI LASIK
Epi-LASIK means Epithelial Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis. It is a form of advanced laser eye surgery ( LASIK Surgery ) that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism through corneal surface ablation. Epi-LASIK combines the features of LASIK, PRK and LASEK to separate the epithelium from the corneal layer beneath, forming a thin flap without cutting. After removing the epithelial layer, the Excimer Laser reshapes the cornea to correct the patient’s prescription. After the Excimer Laser has been utilized, the epithelial flap is put back in place. Unlike LASEK surgery, Epi-LASIK does not use an alcohol solution to loosen and remove the epithelial surface. Epi-LASIK is an ideal procedure for patients with thin corneas that may not be an ideal candidate for traditional LASIK. |
 |
While traditional LASIK is believed to cause the least discomfort, Epi-LASIK has a relative advantage in that it avoids any of the potential complications encountered while making a conventional LASIK flap and during the flap healing process. Epi-LASIK can allow visual recovery in as few as 3 to 4 days, as opposed to the 7 days or more expected with PRK and 5 to 7 days with LASEK. |

LASIK generally offers patients a minimal amount of discomfort, if any. A thin soft bandage contact lens is worn for several days after treatment to minimize discomfort and assist in the healing process. Epi-LASIK is a valuable alternative to ordinary LASIK surgery if the patient has certain corneal conditions., but a LASIK consultation with a LASIK surgeon is highly recommended before deciding which procedure is right for you. |
